Check out how Anna Huthmaker is not only keeping active through hiking, but by playing in an Irish rock band.
Like most women, I
have a long list of interests. Hiking, travel, backpacking....Pretty much
anything that is full of life and fun! Well, to add to that list, I play in an
Irish band called the Border Collies and we just celebrated our version of New
Years, Saint Patrick’s Day. I can't think of anything more full of life and fun
then the wearin' of the green!!
When most people
think of Saint Patty's Day, they think of beer, whiskey and green beads. There
is that, of course, but for me, it is so much more. You have to imagine a warm,
sunny day with the band set up outside. Whole families come to celebrate, so
our jigs and reels are accompanied by kids of all ages, jumping around and
grinning. We hand out kazoos to the crowd and you haven't lived til you have heard
a rousing rendition of "Scotland the Brave" buzzing out over the
grounds!
And if we are really
lucky, there are firemen. People, with a greater knowledge of history than I,
can explain the connection between fire fighters, the Irish, and Saint Patrick's
Day. All I know is that anytime I can look out over a big group of heroes
swaying to "Danny Boy", it is a good day.
When it is all said
and done, I will have spent hours bouncing up and down, playing the bass and
performing with dancers, audience members and my favorite band in the world,
The Border Collies. This is how I know that spring is here and that green is
the color of celebration.
