Junonia mailbag: Let's hear it for colorful clothing and plus size kurtas

Hi Anne,

I love the Crinkle Cotton Crepe Kurta with Embroidery that you featured last year and still have available. In fact, I loved it so much I bought every color. I bought several black ones because I have been looking for a black, plus sized kurta like that for literally years.

I love these shirts because they look good under a jacket at work, they cover my arms when it is cool, but are so light, they can be worn even in the Midwest summer humidity. I would love to have one in a bright cobalt blue, deep purple, dark green, orange, bright yellow, teal, even white, if you can ever carry them again. I have small shoulders and big hips, so the simple round neckline is perfect for me and they are nice and loose.

Thanks again for your wonderful clothing!

Katharine

Hi Katharine,

Thanks so much for your comments! I really like hearing from Junonia customers who have found their personal favorites. As much as we wish every item we produce could please everybody, that’s just not possible, so it’s exciting to hear about it when we come up with a piece that really hits home for someone. As for your specific favorite, a return of that exact kurta may not be on the horizon for a little while, but we’ll certainly be offering some comparable tops that I think you’ll love just as much, if not more!

I love what you say about buying every color. We try to make Junonia products available in as wide a color range as possible. That approach serves a couple of purposes. One, a shopper who might not give a second glance to a pink shirt may love the same item in basic black, and vice versa. And two, customers like Katharine can find a fit and a fabric they really love and stock up in every color. I can’t even guess how many same-shirt, different-color variations I have in my own closet!

Thanks for writing, and keep the comments coming!

Plus size clothing highlight: Hopsack Convertible Casual Wear

When it comes right down to it, there’s really no one right way to wear any article of clothing. Depending on your mood, the weather, or even what coordinating items are in the laundry hamper, a single item can be a base for any number of different outfits.

Even better than a piece that matches easily is an item that features multiple built-in looks. Junonia’s Hopsack Convertible casual collection are just the ticket for plus size women who want a large selection of styles at their fingertips. Our lightweight, easy-to-pack cotton hopsack comes in three versatile styles: a v-neck tank perfect for layering, a 3/4-sleeve summer jacket and a pair of easygoing capri pants. All three styles feature draw cords at the hems – just pull the cord and you’ve got a slightly shorter sleeve or leg with eye-catching shirred detailing. Start off with full coverage in the cool of the morning and adjust to a shorter style as the day warms up!

Junonia loves to hear about women's active events!

We recently received a very nice message from one of the organizers of the Women’s Four Miler Training Program in Charlottesville, Virginia. It’s a great organization that specializes in running and walking training for women, culminating in a four-mile run/walk in September.

When the WFMTP asked us to send some Junonia catalogs their way, we were more than happy to oblige. We love groups that help women get out and get active, and especially that encourage fitness at any size. That type of thinking has been the driving force behind Junonia from the very beginning.

Does your community have any cool running, biking, swimming or other active opportunities for women? We’d love to hear about them! E-mail Junonia founder Anne Kelly at annekellyfounder@junonia.com or, better yet, post a comment on this blog where everyone can see.

Junonia mailbag: Your plus size apparel got me back in the water!

Dear Anne,

When I first bought clothes at Junonia, I was a size 6X. I bought mainly swimwear, and it took all my courage to go to the pool. The way my Junonia swimwear looked so good and fit me so well gave me that extra nudge to do it. It took me months before I was able to ignore the crowd and create a little bubble where I could ignore the stares of other people. I was able to just do my thing, which was half an hour a daily laps. A year later, 80 pounds lighter and down to a size 3X, the word “downsizing” has a new meaning for me.

I give credit to the designs and fit of Junonia clothes. Believe me, I bought a little bit of everything over the years. Only Junonia helped me boost my confidence and made me feel good and comfortable enough to get out there, being active and healthy. Along with my swims, I now have added bike rides. I am like a kid again, never wanting to come in after a great ride. And again, Junonia came through with great biking shorts and panties.

Junonia is with me on this journey. It is so good to be able to rely on a company to provide clothes for an active lifestyle, since other brands and manufacturers of sport clothes have shamelessly ignored those larger sizes. Thank you to everybody at Junonia. Now I only need the Canadian dollar to do better so I can afford more of your stuff!

Thank you,

Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,

What a lovely letter. Your wonderful e-mail brought tears to my eyes. Congratulations on your journey. You are an inspiration to me and I'm sure to many other women. I, too, have been “downsizing” this year and feel great.

At Junonia, we don’t put a lot of emphasis on losing weight. We believe women can be healthy and active at any size, and we strive to create clothing that makes those activities fun and comfortable. At the same time, we know that many of our customers are interested in dropping a size or two, and we love being able to accommodate those women as well. We look at weight loss as a personal matter. If you choose to “downsize,” we say more power to you! And if you’re happy just the way you are, we think that’s just great too!

Over the years, I’ve received more than a few letters from women who loved Junonia swim and active styles when they began their weight loss journeys, but had since moved out of our size range. It always makes me smile a little when those women tell me how much they miss their Junonia gear. Isn’t it sort of a nice change of pace to have smaller ladies be jealous of plus size women for their clothing options?

Thanks for writing, and keep the letters coming.

Plus size clothing highlight: Mandarin Collar Stretch Poplin Kurta

Memorial Day is just around the corner, and that means it’s acceptable to wear white again. OK, so that’s sort of a bygone rule of fashion these days, but summer is still a great time to break out the brightest whites in your casual collection.

Even in the heat of the summer, some women are reluctant to wear a lightweight white top because they’ve had bad experiences with see-through materials. The Junonia design team took those concerns into account with our Mandarin Collar Stretch Poplin Kurta, a beautifully crafted top made with a cool, cling-free material that’s sturdy enough to keep you covered. With an easy-moving, flared cut and gorgeous embroidery at the neckline and long sleeves, this popular piece goes great with skirts or denim and makes an elegant addition to any wardrobe.

Junonia mailbag: Thanks for non-chafing plus size clothes!

Hi Anne,

I recently purchased several pairs of QuikWik® briefs and shorts for my trip to Mexico. I am writing because we suffered under 100-degree temperatures and we walked miles and miles, but never did my pants feel uncomfortable or wet. They did their job beautifully! I have never paid as much for underclothes as I did for those, but they were worth EVERY PENNY!

Thanks for making my trip all about my adventures and not about me (or my chafing).

Sincerely,

Megan

Hi Megan,

Thank you so much for writing. I’m always glad to see a letter in praise of the more technical properties of our QuikWik® apparel. Sweating and chafing are sensitive subjects (no pun intended!), but that doesn’t make them any less of a reality for Junonia customers.

Whether or not people like to talk about it, the fact is that persistent chafing can make a hot weather workout very uncomfortable. Anyone who’s run a midsummer 5K or, like Megan, taken a long hike in a sweltering climate can agree on that. That’s why we take special care in choosing fabrics and designs for our QuikWik® active apparel and undergarments. I’ll pass the mic to our lead designer Emily to explain a little more about the process.

“Our fabric treatment is what makes QuikWik® superior to other micropoly/spandex ‘wicking’ fabrics,” Emily explains. “The treatment absorbs the moisture and perspiration from the skin and transports it quickly through the fabric for fast evaporation, keeping you dry and comfortable under the most extreme conditions. That’s also true of our QuikCool® undies, which use a similar fabric that’s slightly lighter in weight, more suitable for everyday underwear.”

Emily notes that many of our QuikWik® items use flat seaming techniques and self fabric-binding finishes to protect further against chafing. She also reminds you that washing your QuikWik® pieces without bleach or fabric softener will help prolong their functionality.

Who knows – maybe some day someone will come up with an effective active workout with no risk of sweating or chafing. Until then, we’ll keep on making the QuikWik® styles you love!

Thanks for writing, and keep the letters coming!
